94% of Game Studios Surveyed Use AI, New Report Finds
Artificial intelligence is already being used by 94% of game studios surveyed in a new industry report, although more than half of the participants say the technology remains only lightly integrated into their development processes.
The findings come from the Vivrato AI Adoption (VAIA) Report 2026, produced by the gaming consultancy founded by former PlayStation executive Adam Boyes.
According to Vivrato's official VAIA research page, the study examines how game developers are adopting AI, the challenges they face, and the practical results of using these technologies.
Researchers conducted 101 confidential interviews with senior studio executives and decision-makers between April and September 2026, primarily in North America and Europe.
The results show that 97% of respondents have used AI in some form, while 94% reported using it during at least one of nine game production stages.
However, 52% rated AI integration across their development pipelines at three or lower on a ten-point scale, suggesting that adoption does not necessarily mean widespread dependence on the technology.
Regional differences were also identified. Among European respondents, 70% reported using AI for art, assets, and animation, compared with 53% in North America.
The research covers more than generative AI tools such as chatbots and image generators. It also includes machine learning for predicting player behavior and automated systems used during testing.
Boyes explained that the industry's next challenge is understanding where AI provides measurable benefits and where developers continue to encounter limitations.
The findings reflect the 101 interviewed industry leaders rather than every game studio worldwide, offering a snapshot of how AI is currently being used in game development.
