AMD FSR 4.1 Coming to Xbox Series X|S and ROG Xbox Ally

AMD FSR 4.1 is officially coming to Xbox Series X|S consoles and ROG Xbox Ally handhelds, bringing machine learning-based image upscaling technology to Microsoft's gaming platforms.

AMD and Microsoft confirmed the expansion on October 20, 2026, during a presentation featuring AMD executive Jack Huynh and Xbox chief technology officer Scott Van Vliet.

The announcement confirms that FSR 4.1 support is planned for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, with the technology also being optimized for ROG Xbox Ally handheld devices.

According to the original announcement shared by AMD executive Jack Huynh, the companies have been working together to improve graphics performance and image quality across different gaming devices.

FSR 4.1 uses machine learning to reconstruct images from lower rendering resolutions. This approach can reduce GPU workloads while maintaining sharper visuals, potentially allowing developers to improve frame rates without significantly sacrificing image quality.

The technology could be particularly useful for Xbox Series S, which has more limited graphics hardware than Xbox Series X.

However, Microsoft has not confirmed specific frame-rate improvements for either console, and the benefits will depend on how individual games implement the technology.

Xbox chief technology officer Scott Van Vliet explained that the companies have worked closely to optimize FSR 4.1 for Xbox hardware, giving developers another tool to balance visual quality and performance.

The announcement also highlighted Project Helix, Microsoft's upcoming Xbox hardware platform, which is expected to use AMD's more advanced FSR Diamond technology.

FSR Diamond is being developed separately from FSR 4.1 and is intended to support next-generation graphics features, including advanced machine learning-based upscaling and frame generation.

AMD and Microsoft have not provided a specific release date for FSR 4.1 on Xbox Series X|S or announced which console games will support it first.

For now, the announcement confirms that current-generation Xbox consoles will receive another graphics technology upgrade, although its real-world impact remains to be demonstrated.
