Australia Says Workers Can't Take Special Leave to Play GTA 6
Australia's workplace regulator has clarified that employees cannot use certain types of leave simply to take time off work to play GTA 6 when the highly anticipated game launches.
The Fair Work Ombudsman, Australia's government agency responsible for workplace rights and employment regulations, has highlighted the rules surrounding employee absences ahead of the game's release.
According to IXBT Games, excitement surrounding GTA 6 has prompted some employees to consider ways of adjusting their work schedules to spend time playing the game on its release day.
Discussions on social media have included suggestions that some businesses could experience employee absences or even temporary closures. Professional athletes have also reportedly discussed the possibility of sporting events attracting fewer spectators around the game's launch.
With this growing anticipation, Australia's workplace regulator has addressed the conditions under which employees can access different types of leave under the National Employment Standards, particularly when their annual leave has already been exhausted.
Under Australian employment rules, carer's leave is intended for employees who need to care for or support an immediate family or household member because of illness, injury, or an unexpected emergency. It cannot be used simply to spend time playing video games.
The regulator also addressed community service leave, which covers certain eligible activities, including voluntary emergency management and jury duty. Playing GTA 6 does not qualify for this type of leave either.
The Fair Work Ombudsman also responded humorously to the excitement surrounding the game, making a reference to parental leave.
The agency stated: “Although the video game has been in development for a long time, it’s not a child’s birth and there’s no vacation to take care of it.”
The clarification does not mean Australian employees are prohibited from taking time off to play GTA 6. Workers may still request annual leave or other arrangements where permitted by their employment conditions and approved by their employers.
However, the game's release does not provide a special entitlement to leave intended for illness, caregiving, community service, or parental responsibilities.
The discussion highlights the considerable anticipation surrounding GTA 6, with some players already thinking about how to organize their schedules around its launch.
