Beyond Good and Evil 2 Still in Pre-Production After 18 Years
Beyond Good and Evil 2 reportedly remains in pre-production nearly 18 years after Ubisoft first revealed the project in 2008, despite having hundreds of developers assigned to the long-awaited sequel.
According to a new investigation published by French outlet Origami, Ubisoft Montpellier currently has at least 250 employees working on the game, which has yet to enter full production under the company's internal development process.
The report claims that the team is preparing to reach the alpha stage, an important milestone that would allow Ubisoft to finalize the game's core direction and move forward with production.
However, repeated changes to the project's design and gameplay have reportedly prevented it from reaching that point.
Between 2019 and 2022, Beyond Good and Evil 2 was envisioned as a large-scale multiplayer experience featuring multiple planets, connected environments, and online activities.
The project's direction has since shifted toward a primarily single-player adventure, with greater emphasis on storytelling and the possibility of cooperative gameplay.
The report also suggests that Ubisoft executives have repeatedly questioned whether the game's combat systems and overall gameplay are engaging enough, contributing to further revisions and delays.
Uncertainty surrounding the project has reportedly increased amid Ubisoft's wider restructuring, although no cancellation has been officially announced.
Ubisoft continues to list Beyond Good and Evil 2 as an active project at Montpellier, but the company has not publicly confirmed the reported staffing figures or development milestones.
The game currently has no announced release date or confirmed launch window.
