BioWare Shares Farewell Message After Studio Closure

BioWare has published a farewell message following Electronic Arts' decision to close the studio, bringing an end to more than 30 years of game development and stopping work on the next Mass Effect title.

The Canadian developer confirmed its closure on October 21, 2026, through an emotional statement reflecting on its history, employees, and the players who supported its games.

In its official farewell message, BioWare acknowledged the legacy of franchises including Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Anthem.

The studio thanked its community for helping shape these experiences over the decades, emphasizing how players connected with its characters, stories, and fictional worlds.

BioWare also confirmed that early development of the next Mass Effect game has ended, leaving the future of the franchise uncertain.

The closure is part of a broader restructuring at Electronic Arts. According to Bloomberg, approximately 400 employees are affected across the company, representing around 3% of its workforce, including roughly 50 positions at BioWare.

In a separate official announcement, Electronic Arts explained that it is concentrating investment on selected franchises and projects while discontinuing others.

EA described BioWare as an influential developer that helped define the role-playing genre and said it would support affected employees during the transition.

Founded in 1995, BioWare became one of the industry's best-known RPG developers through its focus on character-driven storytelling, player choices, and expansive science-fiction and fantasy settings.

Its final farewell highlighted the importance of the people who worked on its games and the community that continued to support them.

The message marks the end of an influential chapter in role-playing game development, with BioWare's existing titles remaining part of its legacy.
