Canceled Mass Effect 5 Leak Reveals Galactic Cold War and Liara

New details about BioWare's canceled Mass Effect 5 suggest the studio was developing a spy-focused RPG set more than 600 years after the Reaper War, featuring a customizable N7 protagonist and the return of Liara T'Soni.

Australian content creator Dantics claims he participated in a Mass Effect Council that provided feedback on the project, reportedly titled Mass Effect: Universe. His account describes a galaxy divided between three competing powers rather than facing another Reaper invasion.

Humanity, the krogan and batarians would have formed one alliance, while the traditional Citadel Council races represented another. The geth would emerge as a third superpower, creating a galactic Cold War shaped by political tension and an unidentified adversary.

Shepard's legacy reportedly remained part of the story, with the 600-year time jump intended to accommodate different Mass Effect 3 endings. Liara would return as a powerful asari matriarch, while the narrative also explored connections between the Milky Way and Andromeda.

Gameplay was allegedly designed around handcrafted missions offering greater freedom, drawing inspiration from Hitman and Deus Ex. Experimental implants would allow the N7 agent to hack equipment, identify threats through walls and manipulate environmental hazards.

Dantics also described squadmates with conflicting personalities and relationships requiring more active management.

The revelations follow EA's October 21 announcement confirming BioWare's closure and the cancellation of its next Mass Effect project.

While the shutdown is official, Dantics' claimed involvement and the reported story and gameplay features have not been independently confirmed by EA or BioWare.
