CD Projekt RED Boss Pays Tribute to BioWare After Closure

CD Projekt RED co-CEO Michał Nowakowski has paid tribute to BioWare following the studio's closure, highlighting the important role the Mass Effect developer played in the history of The Witcher franchise.

The comments came on October 21, 2026, after Electronic Arts announced that BioWare would close as part of a wider restructuring, ending development of the next Mass Effect game.

In a statement shared on X, Nowakowski explained that CD Projekt's relationship with BioWare began when the Polish company localized and distributed Baldur's Gate games across Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.

That partnership later became important to the development of the original The Witcher, released in 2007.

BioWare allowed CD Projekt RED to use its Aurora Engine, technology originally developed for Neverwinter Nights. The studio also shared development experience and provided space at its E3 exhibition booth to help showcase The Witcher during its early development.

Nowakowski recalled visiting BioWare's Edmonton office and welcoming members of its team to CD Projekt's headquarters in Warsaw.

He expressed sympathy for employees affected by the closure and described the loss of the studio as a difficult moment for the gaming industry.

The tribute highlights a connection between two influential role-playing game developers whose histories became closely linked during CD Projekt RED's early years.

BioWare confirmed its closure in an official farewell statement, thanking its employees and players for more than three decades of support.

Although the studio is closing, its influence continues through franchises such as Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and The Witcher.
