Chrono Trigger DS Gets Native PC Port With 144 FPS Support

An unofficial native PC port of Chrono Trigger's Nintendo DS version has emerged through a new open-source project called Egg of Time, using static recompilation rather than traditional emulation.

Developed by GitHub user power-pudu, the project translates approximately 9,000 ARM and Thumb functions from the original Nintendo DS game into C code, which is then compiled for PC hardware.

According to the official Egg of Time GitHub repository, the port uses a custom C11 runtime and SDL3 to reproduce the Nintendo DS hardware functions needed by the game.

The project supports Windows and Linux, while macOS compatibility remains untested in actual gameplay. A prebuilt Windows package is available, but Linux and macOS currently require compilation from source.

Graphics options include native 16:9 and 21:9 widescreen support, internal resolutions reaching 2816 × 2112, and display rates up to 144 FPS or unlimited.

However, the game logic continues operating at 60 FPS, with interpolated camera scrolling providing smoother presentation at higher display rates.

Other features include single-screen layouts, controller support, save states, graphical filters, SNES-inspired color adjustments, replacement music, and custom cinematics supporting resolutions up to 4K.

The developer reports successful testing of the opening sequence, Millennial Fair, early battles, and the first time-travel sequence. A complete playthrough has not been confirmed.

Egg of Time remains experimental and does not implement Nintendo DS Wi-Fi, microphone functionality, or its 3D graphics engine.

The project requires game data from a legally obtained American Nintendo DS cartridge and does not distribute copyrighted assets.

Chrono Trigger already has an official PC release, but Egg of Time specifically targets the Nintendo DS edition.
