Cyberpunk 2 Director Says Game Is Evolving as Team Grows

Cyberpunk 2 is evolving beyond its director's original vision as more developers contribute ideas to the upcoming sequel. Game director Gabriel Amatangelo has explained how CD Projekt Red is using a collaborative development approach to shape the next chapter of the Cyberpunk franchise.

According to CD Projekt Red's official blog, Amatangelo initially developed the concept for Cyberpunk 2 himself. However, the project's direction has continued to change as additional developers have joined the team and introduced their own creative ideas.

The sequel is being developed primarily at CD Projekt Red's Boston studio, which began with eight developers relocating to the United States. The Cyberpunk 2 development team has since expanded to more than 180 people.

Amatangelo explained that his role involves guiding the overall direction while allowing other developers to influence the final experience. Rather than requiring every creative decision to receive his approval, the studio encourages communication between different departments and gives team leaders greater responsibility.

The director also discussed the importance of questioning established ideas. He believes developers should feel comfortable suggesting experimental features, even when those ideas are eventually rejected.

This approach builds on lessons learned during the development of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, which Amatangelo previously directed. The expansion involved extensive revisions to its environments, missions, and narrative presentation.

Cyberpunk 2 remains in development, and CD Projekt Red has not announced an official release date. Although the studio has discussed its creative philosophy, specific details about the sequel's gameplay, story, and setting remain limited.

As the development team continues to expand, Amatangelo expects Cyberpunk 2 to become a project shaped by the contributions of its creators rather than a single individual's original concept.
