Dead Space Creator Says The Callisto Protocol Was Released Three Months Too Early
Dead Space creator Glen Schofield has criticized publisher Krafton over the development of The Callisto Protocol, claiming that the company forced Striking Distance Studios to release the game three months earlier than originally planned.
In a recent interview, Schofield explained that the team had expected to continue development until March 2023. However, Krafton reportedly insisted on keeping the December 2, 2022 release date, leaving developers with less time to complete the game.
Glen Schofield Blames Early Release for Development Problems
According to GamesRadar+, Schofield said the decision came during an already difficult development period affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Several employees became ill, disrupting production across different departments. The shortened schedule also forced the studio to remove planned content, including boss encounters and additional enemy types.
Schofield expressed frustration with how the situation was handled, arguing that the extra development time could have helped the team address many of the game's problems before launch.
The Callisto Protocol Received 86 Patches After Launch
Following its release, The Callisto Protocol received mixed reviews, with criticism directed at technical issues, combat mechanics, and limited enemy variety.
Schofield revealed that the development team continued working on improvements after launch, delivering 86 patches and updates before completing the game's additional content.
He also claimed that Krafton viewed The Callisto Protocol as a commercial failure while developers were still working to improve the experience.
Despite the difficult launch, Schofield believed the franchise had potential for a sequel. However, those plans never moved forward.
The Callisto Protocol was released in December 2022 for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
