DLSS 5 Foveated Rendering Mod Boosts RTX 4090 FPS by 63%

A new DLSS 5 foveated rendering mod has boosted performance in The Witcher 3 from 49 FPS to more than 80 FPS on an RTX 4090, according to its developer's testing at an ultrawide resolution of 7680 × 2160.

Developed by maximedgoulet, FoveatedDLSS5 modifies the open-source RenoDX DLSS 5 Neural Rendering add-on to reduce GPU processing costs without lowering the entire game's rendering resolution.

In the developer's original announcement, the modder reported a roughly 63% performance improvement in The Witcher 3 using two DLSS 5 processing passes. The result comes from a single reported test configuration rather than an independent multi-game benchmark.

The technique preserves full-quality neural processing in the center of the image while gradually reducing the processing resolution toward the edges. Its adjustable transition region is designed to minimize visible changes between the two areas.

According to the FoveatedDLSS5 GitHub repository, the modification remains a pre-release project tested primarily with The Witcher 3 under DirectX 12. Performance gains and image quality will vary depending on the game and settings.

A separate project, CheekyFoveatedDLSS, also supports experimental DLSS 5 Neural Rendering foveation. Unlike the fixed-center approach, it includes optional eye tracking for compatible VR headsets, allowing the high-quality region to follow the user's gaze.

Both projects are unofficial community modifications, not NVIDIA features. Neither establishes a universal 63% performance improvement across games or graphics cards.
