DLSS 5 Mod Boosts The Witcher 3 FPS From 49 to Over 80 on RTX 4090

A new DLSS 5 mod has demonstrated a significant performance improvement in The Witcher 3, increasing frame rates from approximately 49 FPS to over 80 FPS on an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090.

The open-source project, called FoveatedDLSS5, uses foveated rendering to reduce the resolution of image data processed near the edges of the screen while preserving higher detail in the center.

According to the developer's original Reddit announcement, the modification was tested in The Witcher 3 at a resolution of 7680×2160, using two DLSS 5 rendering passes.

Without foveated rendering, the developer reported approximately 49 FPS. After enabling the feature, performance increased to more than 80 FPS, representing an improvement of over 63%.

The technique works by concentrating rendering resources on the central area of the display, where players are most likely to focus their attention.

Areas closer to the edges receive a lower-resolution input, reducing the amount of processing required for DLSS 5 neural rendering.

This approach is particularly useful for ultrawide gaming monitors with a 32:9 aspect ratio, where peripheral image detail may be less noticeable during gameplay.

FoveatedDLSS5 also allows users to adjust the size of the high-resolution center region, the transition distance, and the resolution reduction applied toward the edges.

The developer explained that the visual difference was difficult to notice during testing, despite the substantial improvement in performance.

The modification is available through the official FoveatedDLSS5 GitHub repository, where interested users can explore the project and its implementation.

The developer also plans to investigate performance in racing games, including Forza and BeamNG.drive, which can be especially demanding on ultrawide displays.

However, the reported results come from the creator's own testing. Actual performance improvements will depend on hardware, display resolution, game settings, and compatibility with the modification.

For players experimenting with DLSS 5 on high-resolution monitors, FoveatedDLSS5 offers a promising way to reduce rendering costs without sacrificing full detail across the entire image.
