Dune: Awakening Developer Funcom Announces Layoffs and New CEO

Funcom, the developer behind Dune: Awakening and Conan Exiles, has announced a new round of layoffs as the company restructures its operations and prepares for a leadership change.

The Norwegian studio confirmed that CEO Rui Casais will leave at the end of 2026 after leading the company for 11 years. Chief Product Officer Scott Junior will take over the position.

According to Funcom's official announcement, the restructuring will allow the company to concentrate on the long-term development and operation of Dune: Awakening and Conan Exiles.

Funcom explained that Dune: Awakening was its largest project to date, requiring substantial development resources across multiple studios.

With the game now available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, the company is transitioning from full production to ongoing updates, expansions, and live operations.

Casais acknowledged that the studio can no longer maintain the same workforce size and organizational structure required during the game's peak development period.

The company confirmed that employees will be affected by the restructuring but has not disclosed the number of planned layoffs. Further details will remain private until the process is completed.

Scott Junior, who has worked at Funcom for 25 years, previously oversaw development and live operations for several major titles, including Conan Exiles and The Secret World.

He also served as executive producer on Dune: Awakening and will now lead the studio's efforts to expand its two main survival games.

Funcom stated that it remains committed to supporting both games with additional content and gameplay updates in the coming years.
