Epic Games Reportedly Pushes AI-First Development for Disney Shooter Project
Epic Games has reportedly instructed developers working on an upcoming Disney collaboration to adopt an AI-first approach, including using artificial intelligence to generate code and artwork.
The unannounced shooter, which is said to feature characters from Marvel and Star Wars, has also been delayed from its previously planned March release window, with no new launch date announced.
Epic Games Reportedly Orders Developers to Prioritize AI
According to Video Games Chronicle, citing a Bloomberg report, the development team has been instructed to rely heavily on generative AI tools such as Anthropic's Claude.
An internal message reportedly directed developers to stop writing code manually and move toward AI-generated workflows. The project's art production is also expected to follow a similar approach, with human developers overseeing and refining the results.
The decision reportedly follows development delays and staffing challenges that affected the project's original schedule.
Epic Games has acknowledged its broader push toward AI-assisted development, emphasizing that the technology can help teams work faster while maintaining creative oversight.
Disney Collaboration Faces Development Changes
The project forms part of Epic Games' growing partnership with Disney, which announced a $1.5 billion investment in the Fortnite developer in 2024.
The collaboration aims to expand interactive entertainment experiences involving Disney properties, including Marvel and Star Wars.
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has also publicly supported the wider adoption of AI tools, arguing that they can help developers increase productivity and create more ambitious experiences.
However, the reported instructions for the Disney shooter represent a more extensive use of generative AI than traditional development assistance.
Neither Epic Games nor Disney has announced a new release date for the project, and further details about its gameplay remain limited.
