Former Naughty Dog Artist's Controversial Defense of the Studio's Crunch Culture
A former Naughty Dog visual effects artist has shared new details about the studio's demanding working hours and workplace culture during the development of its games.
The practice of excessive overtime, commonly known as "crunch," has long been one of the most controversial topics surrounding Naughty Dog.
Matt Redford, a former visual effects artist who worked on The Last of Us and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, recently discussed the studio's working conditions during an interview with the Kiwi Talkz podcast, offering his perspective on the company's work culture and challenging some public perceptions of its management.
According to GamesRadar, Redford acknowledged that reports of extremely long working hours were largely accurate. However, he argued that the situation was more complicated than the image presented in some media coverage.
Matt Redford explained:
“You felt that my God, we were going to work more than 100 hours a week, that’s possible; however, we’ve all been there in some way to make progress and try to work at the highest level, so it’s always complicated. It’s not as simple as something that news articles show that an evil company is imposing terrible hours on its employees. It was more like a group of motivated people together who, with a little pressure from their peers, pushed the people around them to do their best. Yes, it takes a lot of time.”
Redford suggested that the demanding environment was not simply the result of management imposing excessive working hours. Instead, he described a team of highly motivated developers who pushed themselves and their colleagues to achieve the highest possible standards.
However, he also acknowledged that this dedication could create pressure among employees and lead to extremely demanding working schedules.
The former Naughty Dog artist also discussed the relationship between difficult working conditions and artistic achievement, suggesting that the dedication and effort of the development team played an important role in the quality of the studio's games.
Matt Redford added:
“There were certainly exhausting times, but the results of their work express everything, and in the end I think the secret of Naughty Dog lies in its people, where everyone is guided and motivated. That’s why games are great.”
His comments offer another perspective on Naughty Dog's work culture, highlighting both the challenges of demanding development schedules and the commitment of the people involved in creating its games.
