Gears of War 2, 3 and Judgment PC Ports Get COGBox Launcher

Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, and Gears of War: Judgment now have a unified launcher for their unofficial native PC ports. Called COGBox, the fan-made project introduces modern graphics features, higher frame rates, and keyboard-and-mouse support across all three Xbox 360 titles.

Developed by Shagg88, the project uses static recompilation to translate the games' original Xbox 360 code into native Windows applications. Unlike conventional emulation, the translated game code runs directly on PC, supported by a custom rendering system.

According to the developer's official COGBox GitHub repository, the ports support resolutions up to 5K, HDR10, 21:9 ultrawide displays, and modern image-processing technologies including NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR, and Intel XeSS.

The original 30 FPS limits have also been lifted, with options for 60 FPS, 120 FPS, or uncapped performance. Additional graphics settings include SMAA anti-aliasing, 16x anisotropic filtering, adjustable field of view, and experimental AMD FSR frame generation.

COGBox brings the three games together in a single interface, offering individual graphics settings, chapter selection, title update management, and controller support. Gears of War 2 also includes split-screen functionality.

The developer describes all three ports as playable, although some technical issues remain. Testing has primarily been conducted on an NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti, leaving compatibility with other hardware configurations less certain.

Windows 10 and 11 are supported, while Linux and Steam Deck compatibility through Proton remains experimental. Online cooperative play is planned but has not been confirmed as available.

COGBox is an unofficial project unaffiliated with Microsoft or The Coalition. Players must provide legally obtained copies of the original games, as the launcher does not include copyrighted game files.
