Gears of War: E-Day Concept Art Reveals Young Marcus and Dom
New concept art from Gears of War: E-Day reveals how developer The Coalition redesigned Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago for the game's earlier timeline.
Kev Chu, lead concept artist at The Coalition, shared early character designs on ArtStation, offering a closer look at the creative process behind the younger versions of the franchise's two central characters.
The artwork highlights the challenge of maintaining their recognizable appearances while adapting them to E-Day's darker, more realistic visual direction.
For Dom Santiago, the team initially experimented with a highly stylized appearance. However, the early design did not match the gritty realism established for the game.
Artists gradually adjusted his facial proportions, hairstyle, and other defining features, aiming to preserve the character's familiar identity without making him appear too exaggerated.
Marcus Fenix presented a similar challenge. According to Chu, the team studied his appearance throughout the original Gears of War trilogy, along with his older character models from Gears of War 4 and Gears 5.
Working under the direction of studio art director Aryan Hanbeck and creative director Matt Searcy, the artists sought to combine the franchise's distinctive character designs with a more grounded visual style.
Marcus's recognizable scowl and heavy eyebrows remained essential to his appearance. Additional facial details, including scars and realistic textures, helped establish his younger but battle-hardened look.
The concept art provides an interesting look at how The Coalition approached two of gaming's most recognizable characters while preserving their visual identities.
Gears of War: E-Day launched on October 6, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S and PC.
