Gears of War: E-Day Reportedly Cost Over $500 Million

Gears of War: E-Day reportedly cost Microsoft more than $500 million to develop, potentially making it one of the most expensive video games ever produced.

According to a new Kotaku report published on October 22, 2026, a source familiar with Xbox's business claims that the development budget exceeded half a billion dollars, excluding marketing expenses.

Microsoft and developer The Coalition have not publicly confirmed the figure, meaning the reported cost remains unverified.

The latest claim follows an earlier report from Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson in June, which suggested that the game's production budget had already surpassed $400 million.

However, Windows Central journalist Jez Corden previously questioned that estimate, noting that The Coalition also develops technology and provides technical assistance to other Xbox Game Studios.

This makes it difficult to determine how much of the studio's overall spending should be attributed directly to Gears of War: E-Day.

If the new estimate is accurate, the game's development costs would exceed those reported for several major AAA releases, including Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

Gears of War: E-Day launched on October 6, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S and PC, with day-one availability through Xbox Game Pass.

The reported budget has also raised questions about the game's commercial performance, particularly as Microsoft continues to focus on Xbox exclusivity for the franchise.

For now, the $500 million figure remains a claim from an unnamed source rather than an officially disclosed development budget.
