An experimental project has reportedly managed to run Ghost of Yotei on a PC, although the results show that the technology remains far from delivering a playable experience. The PlayStation 5 exclusive was able to reach its 3D environment on Windows, but performance was limited to approximately 3.4 frames per minute.
According to IXBT Games, the test was conducted using AnyPS5, an experimental project designed to help run PlayStation 5 software on Linux and Windows.
The developers have made some progress in reducing loading times. Earlier tests reportedly required around 13 minutes to load the game world, while more recent improvements have reduced that time to approximately seven minutes.
However, the game still takes roughly 17 to 18 seconds to render a single frame, making normal gameplay practically impossible.
Technical Challenges Continue to Affect Performance
The main difficulties appear to involve resource management, texture handling, and the process of translating the game's rendering operations for PC hardware.
A developer known as Celegas12 explained that a significant amount of processing time is spent linking resources. According to the reported technical findings, this operation alone can take approximately ten seconds.
The developer also described how thousands of textures and rendering-related entries are recreated for each frame, placing additional demands on the system.
The reported figures include around 16,600 texture operations and 16,386 entries in a rendering-related table per frame. The developer indicated that the texture cache remains too small for the game's environment and that further improvements are planned.
These technical limitations help explain why the game can reach its 3D environment but cannot yet operate at a practical frame rate.
A Technical Milestone, Not a Playable PC Release
Despite the extremely low performance, reaching the game's 3D environment represents progress for the experimental project.
The ability to move beyond initial loading screens and menus suggests that parts of the game's software can function through the tool, even though substantial compatibility and optimization challenges remain.
It is important to distinguish this experiment from an official PC port. Ghost of Yotei has not received a PC release through this project, and the reported results do not indicate that the game is ready for regular gameplay on Windows.
Future improvements to AnyPS5 could address some of the current limitations, but there is no confirmed timeline for achieving playable performance.
For now, the experiment demonstrates both the technical progress being made and the considerable challenges involved in running PlayStation 5 software on a different platform.
