GTA 5 AI Mod Lets Players Talk to NPCs Using Voice
A new AI-powered GTA 5 mod called NPCTalk allows players to speak directly with non-playable characters using their microphones, with NPCs responding in their own simulated voices.
Developed by Universal Modder, the project introduces dynamic conversations with characters such as Michael, Lamar, pedestrians, and police officers across Los Santos.
Unlike traditional scripted dialogue, NPCTalk generates responses based on what players say, the character's personality, and the surrounding situation.
According to the developer's official GitHub repository, NPCs can also perform actions in response to spoken instructions, creating more interactive encounters.
The system combines several AI technologies. NVIDIA Nemotron handles speech recognition, while language models running through Cerebras generate dialogue.
Fish Audio Drama 3 and S2 Pro provide synthesized character voices, with cloud-based GPU infrastructure handling voice generation.
The developer has demonstrated conversations in which Lamar comments on the player's clothing, Michael responds to remarks about his outfit, and police officers react with dialogue and gestures.
Although the developer has promoted response times of around one second, actual performance can vary depending on the configuration and cloud processing delays.
NPCTalk is available as an open-source toolkit, with the developer also preparing a more accessible GTA 5 implementation.
However, setting up the system requires additional software and accounts with external AI services, some of which may involve usage costs.
The project is designed for GTA 5's single-player mode and should not be used in GTA Online, where unauthorized modifications can violate the game's rules.
NPCTalk is an unofficial community project and is not affiliated with Rockstar Games. Its underlying tools are also designed to support similar AI conversations in other games.
