GTA 6 Former Designer Reveals Rockstar's Biggest Challenge

A former GTA 6 and Red Dead Redemption 2 designer has revealed that meeting Rockstar Games' demanding expectations can be a bigger challenge for employees than layoffs or financial uncertainty.

Jérémy Hartvick, who worked at Rockstar North before leaving in 2020, discussed the studio's working conditions during an October 19 interview with the Kiwi Talkz podcast.

According to the original Kiwi Talkz interview, Rockstar's financial resources were rarely a concern during his time at the company. Instead, employees faced constant pressure to meet the studio's unusually high development standards.

Hartvick explained that developers who struggled to meet expectations could find it difficult to remain at Rockstar, even though the company had sufficient funding to support its projects.

The former designer also discussed the demanding workload surrounding Red Dead Redemption 2, revealing that he experienced periods of approximately 100 working hours per week during development.

His decision to leave Rockstar was influenced by personal circumstances and the difficulty of balancing work with family life. Working at Rockstar North in Edinburgh required him to live away from his home country.

Hartvick also described the technical complexity of Rockstar's mission development process, where designers often spend considerable time scripting character behavior and refining gameplay sequences.

Although he contributed to early GTA 6 development, Hartvick left the studio years before the game's planned release.

His comments offer insight into the challenges of creating Rockstar's ambitious open-world games, but they reflect his personal experience rather than an official assessment of the company's current working conditions.
