GTA 6 Gets CERO Z Rating in Japan, Raising Censorship Questions

Grand Theft Auto VI has received a CERO Z age rating in Japan, confirming that Rockstar Games' upcoming open-world title will be restricted to players aged 18 and older in the country.

The classification has appeared on the Japanese PlayStation Store and Xbox Store, replacing the previously pending rating. The listed content descriptors include crime and violence, matching the categories assigned to Grand Theft Auto V.

However, the Japanese listing has raised questions about whether GTA 6 will feature content differences compared to its international versions.

The game's North American ESRB and European PEGI ratings describe additional mature content, including graphic violence and sexual themes. These differences have prompted speculation that certain scenes could be modified for the Japanese release.

Rockstar Games has not announced any censorship or regional content changes for GTA 6. The absence of particular content descriptors from the Japanese rating does not necessarily mean those elements have been removed.

The discussion also reflects the history of Grand Theft Auto V in Japan, where some scenes were modified compared to international releases despite receiving the same CERO Z classification.

For now, the confirmed information is limited to the game's Japanese age rating and its listed content categories. Whether the final Japanese version differs from releases in other regions remains unknown.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
