GTA 6 HDR Trailer Analysis Raises Concerns Over Image Quality

GTA 6's latest trailer has raised questions about Rockstar Games' HDR implementation after image-quality analysts identified unusual color behavior and a possible lack of additional highlight detail.

HDR and color-grading specialist Filippo Tarpini examined the October 15 launch trailer, highlighting potential problems with how the footage handles brightness and color transitions.

In his original analysis on X, Tarpini noted that bright blue lighting appears to shift toward purple during a swimming pool sequence. He also identified visible color banding around certain lights.

These effects may be related to the trailer's tone-mapping process, which determines how brightness and colors are represented on screen.

Separately, analyst MusaRenoDX questioned whether the HDR presentation contains additional highlight information compared with standard dynamic range footage.

The comparison raised the possibility of inverse tone mapping, a technique that expands an SDR image into an HDR brightness range without necessarily restoring detail missing from the original image.

However, this remains speculation rather than confirmation of Rockstar's rendering technology.

HDR can improve perceived brightness, contrast, and color presentation, but it does not automatically increase texture resolution, geometric complexity, or other graphical details.

Importantly, Tarpini's observations concern the published trailer, not a tested retail version of GTA 6. Trailer encoding, color grading, and display conversion can all influence the results.

Rockstar Games has not publicly detailed the game's final HDR implementation.

GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
