GTA 6 May Have Fixed Rockstar's Long-Standing Animation Issue

GTA 6 may have finally resolved a long-standing animation stutter issue affecting Rockstar Games titles for nearly two decades, according to a new technical analysis by Digital Foundry.

In its GTA 6 launch trailer breakdown, published on October 16, Digital Foundry reported that a recurring visual problem associated with Rockstar's RAGE engine appears to be absent from the latest footage.

The issue, observed in games including GTA 4, GTA 5, and Red Dead Redemption 2, causes subtle irregularities in character animations and camera movement.

Unlike traditional performance stuttering, the problem can occur even when a game maintains a stable frame rate. It appears to be related to how animation updates are synchronized with rendered frames.

Digital Foundry previously identified the same issue in GTA 6's extended gameplay presentation released in August 2026.

However, the newly released launch trailer shows a noticeable improvement.

Despite featuring several sweeping camera movements, which typically make animation stutter easier to identify, the latest footage reportedly shows no obvious signs of the problem.

This suggests Rockstar may have made significant improvements to the underlying animation system during the final stages of development.

Nevertheless, Digital Foundry has not confirmed that the issue has been permanently fixed. Carefully selected trailer sequences could also explain its absence.

GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its final release will provide a clearer indication of whether Rockstar has successfully addressed the issue.
