GTA Vice City Writer Dan Houser Says Ray Liotta Saved His Dialogue

Rockstar Games co-founder and former lead writer Dan Houser has praised the late Ray Liotta for his performance as Tommy Vercetti in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, admitting that the actor made his writing sound significantly better than it appeared on paper.

During a recent career-spanning video interview, Houser reflected on working with Liotta during the development of Rockstar's 2002 open-world classic.

Houser jokingly criticized his own writing while explaining how Liotta transformed the dialogue through his performance.

He emphasized that exceptional actors contribute more than simply delivering scripted lines. According to Houser, the best performers discover details and personality traits that writers may not have explicitly included in their scripts.

Liotta, known for his performances in Goodfellas and Something Wild, brought that additional depth to Tommy Vercetti, helping establish the character as one of Grand Theft Auto's most recognizable protagonists.

Houser also recalled how Rockstar arranged the collaboration by contacting Liotta's representatives and offering payment for approximately four days of recording.

The team initially worked with the actor in New York before arranging additional recording sessions in Los Angeles closer to the game's release.

Although Liotta appeared less enthusiastic during one session, Houser remembered that he returned the following day and completed several hours of dialogue recording.

Looking back, Houser credited Liotta with giving Tommy a sense of authenticity that would have been difficult to achieve with another performer.

More than two decades after Vice City's release, Liotta's portrayal remains a defining part of the game's identity and one of Rockstar's most memorable voice performances.
