Jailbroken PS5 Gains Unofficial PS2 and PS3 Emulators
The PlayStation 5 homebrew community is making progress toward running older PlayStation games directly on Sony's latest console, thanks to unofficial ports of popular PS2 and PS3 emulators.
One of the most notable projects is PS5SX2, a native PlayStation 2 emulator based on the open-source PCSX2 software.
According to the developer's official GitHub repository, PS5SX2 runs on jailbroken PS5 consoles and uses a Vulkan-based graphics renderer to emulate PS2 games without relying on cloud streaming.
The emulator supports resolution scaling up to six times the original PS2 resolution, along with widescreen patches and optional 60 FPS modifications for compatible games.
Its development has also expanded beyond the PS5 Pro, with testing reported on original PS5 and Slim models across multiple firmware versions.
Meanwhile, developers are exploring PlayStation 3 emulation through unofficial RPCS3 ports.
The KB-RPCS3 project brings the RPCS3 emulator to jailbroken PS5 hardware, although it remains in an early alpha stage.
The developer has reported limited success with games including LIMBO and Grand Theft Auto IV, with the latter experiencing significant performance problems.
Other experimental projects are investigating ways to access original game discs through the PS5's optical drive.
However, direct disc compatibility remains separate from basic emulation support, and the available evidence does not establish that every PS2 or PS3 disc can be inserted and played reliably.
These developments also do not mean Sony has enabled official backward compatibility for physical PS2 and PS3 games.
Both projects require modified consoles and remain independent of Sony Interactive Entertainment.
For now, the progress demonstrates the potential of PS5 homebrew emulation while highlighting the compatibility, performance, and technical limitations developers still need to overcome.
