Lucasfilm Teases More Surprise Star Wars Games

Lucasfilm Games is expanding its approach to Star Wars video game development, with the company exploring partnerships with both major publishers and smaller independent studios for future projects.

Douglas Reilly, vice president of Lucasfilm Games, discussed the strategy during an interview with The Game Business, explaining that the company has become more flexible about which developers can work with the Star Wars franchise.

Reilly said successful Star Wars games do not necessarily require the backing of the industry's largest publishers. Instead, Lucasfilm is focusing on experienced development teams capable of delivering high-quality experiences across different genres.

The executive pointed to Star Wars: Zero Company and Star Wars: Galactic Racer as examples of this approach.

Zero Company was developed by Bit Reactor, a studio founded by experienced strategy game developers, while Galactic Racer was created by Fuse Games, which includes former Criterion developers known for their work on Burnout and Need for Speed.

Both projects demonstrate Lucasfilm's willingness to explore different genres beyond traditional large-scale Star Wars action games.

Reilly also revealed that the company is exploring additional collaborations with partners of different sizes, suggesting that some future announcements could surprise fans.

However, he emphasized that major AAA productions remain an important part of Lucasfilm Games' long-term strategy.

The broader approach follows the end of Electronic Arts' exclusive Star Wars licensing arrangement, which began in 2013 and expired in 2023.

Several other Star Wars projects remain in development, including Respawn Entertainment's next Star Wars Jedi game and Quantic Dream's Star Wars Eclipse.

Lucasfilm has not announced specific details about the additional partnerships or projects mentioned by Reilly.
