Machinarium Developer Slams AI-Generated Tribute Video
Amanita Design, the Czech studio behind Machinarium, has strongly criticized an AI-generated animation inspired by its popular adventure game, prompting the video's creator to remove it and issue a public apology.
The controversy began on October 20, 2026, when Sylvio Drouin, CEO of AI storytelling company Nura Studios, shared an animated video described as a tribute to the original Machinarium.
The video recreated characters and environments associated with Amanita Design's 2009 puzzle adventure using generative artificial intelligence.
However, the developer rejected the project, arguing that transforming its original artwork into AI-generated animation did not represent a genuine tribute.
In a statement published through its official X account, Amanita Design criticized the use of Machinarium assets in the animation and described the result as disconnected from the studio's artistic work.
The developer also emphasized the importance of handmade creativity, responding to the video's description as a love letter by arguing that such expressions should be created by hand.
Following the criticism, Drouin deleted the promotional posts and apologized publicly. He explained that Nura Studios had intended to celebrate Amanita Design's work rather than offend its creators.
At the time of reporting, Amanita Design had not publicly accepted the apology or announced further action regarding the video.
The dispute comes shortly after the official announcement of Machinarium 2, which will continue the story of Josef and Berta after the original game's release in 2009.
According to the developer's official Steam announcement, several members of the original creative team are returning for the sequel, including artist Adolf Lachman and composer Tomáš Dvořák.
Amanita Design has not announced a release date for Machinarium 2.
