Marvel's Wolverine Actress Debra Wilson Criticizes Face Scans in Games

Debra Wilson, the actress behind Callisto in Marvel's Wolverine, has explained why she prefers video game characters that do not resemble her real-life appearance. Despite appearing in several major gaming franchises, Wilson believes using an actor's face too frequently can limit the creative possibilities of a performance.

Speaking on the Hyperfixated with Joseph Shepherd podcast, Wilson clarified that decisions about character appearances are made by game developers rather than the actors themselves.

She pointed to Marvel's Wolverine and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League as examples of studios choosing to model characters after her appearance. In Wolverine, Wilson portrays Callisto, an established X-Men character who has appeared in several different forms throughout Marvel's history.

Wilson questioned why developers would make Callisto resemble her when the character already has numerous existing designs. She explained that she enjoys playing characters who look completely different from herself because it allows her to become someone else.

The actress also discussed her interest in performing different voices and accents, including Swedish and Russian accents. For Wilson, that freedom to transform into another character is an important part of video game acting.

Wilson has an extensive gaming career, including her performances as Cere Junda in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, and characters in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.

Although the podcast episode originally aired on June 2, 2026, her comments have recently resurfaced online, drawing renewed attention to the growing use of facial scanning in major video game productions.
