Modder Adds Co-Op to Resident Evil 2 Remake for His Wife

Modder Adds Co-Op to Resident Evil 2 Remake for His Wife

Resident Evil 2 Remake has received a new fan-made mod that introduces cooperative gameplay and AI-controlled companion support, allowing players to experience the survival horror adventure with another character by their side.

Created by a modder known as Shopcreeper01, the project expands the original single-player experience by introducing new ways to explore Raccoon City alongside a friend or a computer-controlled partner.

According to IXBT Games, the mod allows a second player to control HUNK or choose from 14 additional characters while accompanying Leon Kennedy or Claire Redfield through the story campaign.

Players can choose between several viewing options, including split-screen gameplay, a shared-screen perspective, and classic fixed camera angles inspired by earlier Resident Evil games.

These options provide different ways to experience the campaign while maintaining the atmosphere and environments of the original remake.

A Co-Op Mod Inspired by the Creator's Wife

The project reportedly began as a way for the developer to help his wife enjoy Resident Evil 2 Remake despite finding the game frightening.

Initially, HUNK was designed as an AI-controlled companion who could accompany Leon or Claire, assist during combat, and provide useful supplies such as ammunition and healing items.

As development continued, the concept expanded into a more complete cooperative experience.

The creator explained how the project evolved: "HUNK initially started as a support companion; he fought alongside Leon or Claire and helped them with first aid and ammunition packages. Now he can become a complete teammate to play with a split screen that has his own backpack and the post-fall revival mechanic."

The mod now allows the second character to participate more actively in gameplay, including managing a separate inventory and helping the main player during difficult encounters.

New Revival Mechanics and Gameplay Features

Another important addition is a modified health and revival system.

Instead of immediately ending the game when a character loses all their health, the mod introduces a downed state that gives players an opportunity to recover.

A fallen character can reportedly use a healing item to recover or receive assistance from a teammate.

This mechanic encourages cooperation and gives players another chance to survive challenging situations without immediately restarting from a checkpoint.

The addition of an AI-controlled companion also means players can benefit from some of these features without necessarily having another person available to join the game.

How to Access the Mod

The cooperative mod is reportedly available for free through Nexus Mods.

According to the report, players need REFramework version 1.5.9.1, available through GitHub, to run the project.

As this is a community-created modification rather than an official Capcom update, compatibility and performance may vary depending on the installed game version and other modifications.

The project offers Resident Evil 2 Remake fans a different way to revisit the campaign, particularly those who prefer exploring Raccoon City with a companion rather than facing its challenges alone.
