Modern Warfare 4 Launch Reportedly Lacks Open Matchmaking

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is reportedly launching without a dedicated Open Matchmaking playlist, raising concerns among players who prefer multiplayer matches with less emphasis on skill-based matchmaking (SBMM).

The issue emerged on October 22, 2026, as players in New Zealand gained early access to the game's multiplayer servers ahead of its worldwide release on October 23.

According to early player reports, the launch playlist menu does not include an Open Matchmaking option, despite the feature being available during the game's beta testing period.

Open Matchmaking reduces the importance of player skill when creating multiplayer lobbies, placing greater emphasis on factors such as connection quality. The system was previously introduced in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.

Activision had confirmed that Open playlists would be included in the Modern Warfare 4 beta, allowing players to compare different matchmaking approaches before launch.

However, the publisher's official Modern Warfare 4 launch guide lists multiplayer maps and modes without confirming a dedicated Open Matchmaking playlist.

The reported omission has prompted criticism from players concerned about the continued influence of SBMM on casual multiplayer matches.

Infinity Ward has previously discussed changes to its matchmaking approach, but the studio has not publicly confirmed whether Open Matchmaking will return in a future update.

Modern Warfare 4 officially launches on October 23, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
