Mortal Kombat 9 Now Runs in Browsers With Online Multiplayer

Mortal Kombat 9, the 2011 fighting game developed by NetherRealm Studios, has received an unofficial browser adaptation featuring online multiplayer, additional characters and controller support.

The fan-made project, developed by Lauta under the name Mortal Kombardo 9, emerged on October 27, 2026. It is associated with the website mk9.lauta.site and is not affiliated with Warner Bros. Games or NetherRealm Studios.

Unlike cloud gaming services, the adaptation processes gameplay locally through WebAssembly and WebGPU. WebAssembly handles the browser-compatible game code, while WebGPU provides access to graphics hardware for rendering.

The project supports single-player gameplay and online matches through private rooms, allowing two participants to compete remotely. Keyboard controls and compatible Xbox and PlayStation controllers are also supported.

According to reports describing the project, the browser edition includes the additional fighters and costumes associated with the original game's expanded releases, alongside Kratos from God of War.

Instead of loading every asset immediately, the adaptation retrieves fighters and arenas when needed and stores them in the browser cache. Progress can also be exported and imported between compatible browsers.

The reported browser requirements include recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Opera and Brave, alongside Firefox 153 or newer. Mobile compatibility has not been established.

The project remains an unofficial adaptation of a commercially copyrighted game. Its distribution has not been confirmed as authorized by the rights holders, and its continued availability is uncertain.
