Need for Speed Underground 2 Now Runs in Browsers at 120 FPS

Need for Speed Underground 2 is now playable directly in web browsers through an unofficial fan-made PC port, bringing the 2004 racing game back with multiplayer support and several technical improvements.

Developer th0mk introduced the project on October 19, 2026, confirming that the browser version supports up to 120 FPS, improved display resolutions, controller input, and online multiplayer.

Unlike traditional emulation, the project translates the original game's x86 executable code into C before compiling it into WebAssembly. Direct3D 9 graphics calls are handled through WebGPU, allowing the game to run in compatible browsers.

According to the developer's official GitHub repository, the project works with Google Chrome and Firefox and requires users to provide their own copy of Need for Speed Underground 2.

One of its biggest additions is free-roam multiplayer, allowing players connected to the same server to explore Bayview together. The original online functionality has also been restored, including the ability to create and join multiplayer lobbies.

Other improvements include skippable startup videos, save backup and restoration, and settings designed for modern displays.

The developer also acknowledged using Claude Code during development, while crediting earlier static recompilation work that helped make the browser conversion possible.

The project remains unofficial and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Electronic Arts. Performance depends on browser compatibility and hardware capabilities, so 120 FPS is not guaranteed on every device.

Players can explore the project through its official website, nfsu2.xyz, or review the publicly available source code on GitHub.
