New GTA 6 Gameplay Details Reveal Major Changes to Stealth, Police Chases, and the Open World

New technical details about GTA 6 and its gameplay mechanics have been revealed following the release of a full interview with Rockstar North Development Director Rob Nelson.

IGN published the full interview with Nelson, offering new information about the gameplay and the world of GTA 6. The discussion focuses on the dynamic nature of Leonida, the interaction between Jason and Lucia, and major changes to systems such as stealth, police chases, and how the open world reacts to the player.

According to Insider Gaming, the game world features systems similar to the camp mechanics seen in Red Dead Redemption 2. NPCs can react to suspicious player behavior, including following someone or remaining close to them for an extended period.

The vehicle theft system has also become more complex with the introduction of new technology and security measures. Police identification is more detailed as well, with factors such as the player's clothing, hairstyle, and companions potentially affecting how authorities recognize them.

Rob Nelson, Development Director at Rockstar North, said: “We are very excited about what is going on in the open world, how it reacts to you, and the coordination of systems. Many spontaneous and natural things happen when surfing. When we passed by a parking lot and Jason offered to do something, it was quite fresh for me because I hadn’t heard this dialogue before. I was going to go to a pawn shop, but Jason made another offer while driving, and I changed my mind.”

The example highlights Rockstar's focus on making activities feel more spontaneous while exploring Leonida. Rather than having every activity begin in a predetermined way, situations can emerge naturally as players move through the world.

Nelson also discussed how changing a character's appearance can affect encounters with law enforcement: “Change hairstyles change your appearance, but the police are still aware of your clothes, so standing outdoors doesn’t help. If you reach the degree of chasing three stars, it will be very difficult to escape by car unless you have a very fast car or a sports motorcycle. The best option is to go to the streets on foot. The police have identified my clothes and the cover was leaked, but there is no problem if the clothes are changed.”

These mechanics could make escaping the police more involved than simply driving away from the search area. Players may need to consider their clothing, appearance, vehicle, and escape route when trying to avoid detection.

GTA 6 will also allow Jason and Lucia to separate during an escape, which can divide the attention of the police. Certain actions involving the game's social features may also be restricted depending on whether the characters are actively trying to escape.

Burglary missions will provide additional choices. Players can choose louder approaches involving explosives or attempt to open safes immediately, with these decisions affecting both the potential reward and how quickly police forces respond.

Together, these systems suggest that GTA 6 is placing greater emphasis on interactions between different gameplay mechanics. The behavior of NPCs, police identification, character appearance, robberies, and the relationship between Jason and Lucia can all influence how situations develop throughout the open world.
