NFSU2.xyz Runs Need for Speed Underground 2 in Browsers

Need for Speed Underground 2 is the subject of an unofficial browser-based project known as NFSU2.xyz, which adapts the original 2004 PC racing game to run through modern web technologies.

The project, called Underground 2 Revived, builds on earlier recompilation work that converts portions of the game's original Windows code into a format compatible with web browsers.

According to the project's official website, its implementation uses WebAssembly for game execution and WebGPU for graphics rendering. These technologies allow the game to operate locally within a browser rather than through remote cloud streaming.

The developer also reports support for widescreen resolutions and frame rates reaching 120 FPS under suitable conditions. These figures represent the project's stated capabilities, not independently verified performance across different devices.

Additional features include controller compatibility, touchscreen input, local save storage, and optional online multiplayer. The multiplayer functionality operates through infrastructure separate from the original Electronic Arts online services.

The project's GitHub repository identifies developer th0mk and references earlier NFSU2Recomp work by Talha Müderrisoğlu.

Despite these technical developments, browser compatibility and performance can vary depending on hardware, graphics drivers, and WebGPU support.

The project is not an official release, remaster, or licensed browser edition from Electronic Arts. Its public availability also does not establish that distribution of the original game's assets has been authorized.

NFSU2.xyz represents another example of developers experimenting with recompilation and browser graphics technology to adapt older PC games to modern platforms.
