NVIDIA Makes DLSS 5 Twice as Fast With 20% Less VRAM
NVIDIA has announced a major update to DLSS 5, introducing a faster AI model that reduces GPU overhead and memory usage while maintaining comparable image quality.
According to NVIDIA's official announcement, the improved 3D-Guided Neural Rendering model runs twice as fast as the version released in September 2026.
The October update also reduces the model's size by 24% to approximately 118 million parameters and lowers VRAM consumption by 20% at 4K resolution.
NVIDIA says these optimizations cut the GPU processing overhead in half without significantly affecting visual quality. However, the improvement does not mean that games will automatically achieve twice their previous frame rates.
The updated model will arrive in NBA 2K27 on October 16, with NVIDIA claiming performance improvements of up to 1.4 times on supported hardware.
Hogwarts Legacy will receive DLSS 5 on November 5, introducing enhanced lighting and material rendering. Avalanche Software has also adjusted the technology to better preserve the game's original artistic style.
Where Winds Meet is expected to receive DLSS 5 support later in 2026.
NVIDIA has also introduced an experimental Performance Mode for Frame Generation, available through the NVIDIA app beta. The company claims the new mode can improve Frame Generation performance by up to 35% on the RTX 5060, although some image quality compromises are possible.
Additionally, RTX Remix will receive DLSS 5 support on October 23, allowing modders to use the improved neural rendering model when enhancing classic PC games.
The update represents another step toward making DLSS 5 more efficient, although independent testing will be needed to determine how consistently the improvements translate into real-world gaming performance.
