Onimusha Adds New Dismemberment Technology to RE Engine
Capcom has introduced a new dynamic dismemberment system to its RE Engine through Onimusha: Way of the Sword, allowing enemies to be sliced along the exact path of a sword strike while their death animations continue naturally.
The technology was developed specifically for the samurai action game and required changes to Capcom's proprietary engine. Unlike traditional dismemberment effects, enemies do not freeze before their bodies separate.
In an original interview with PC Gamer, director Satoru Nihei explained that combining precise sword cuts with animated enemy reactions was one of the team's biggest technical challenges.
The system works alongside Onimusha's finishing attacks, including Issen, allowing protagonist Miyamoto Musashi to cut through enemies while their bodies continue moving and falling.
Capcom also invested heavily in motion capture and physics-based animation transitions to make sword combat feel natural regardless of the direction of an incoming attack.
Nihei explained that the developers deliberately avoided the unrestricted cutting mechanics seen in games such as Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Instead, dismemberment reacts to specific attacks, preserving Onimusha's combat rhythm and emphasizing the impact of Musashi's abilities.
The technology could eventually benefit other Capcom franchises because it is now part of the RE Engine. However, the company has not confirmed plans to introduce the system in future Resident Evil games or other upcoming releases.
For now, Onimusha: Way of the Sword demonstrates how Capcom's engine can combine precise dismemberment effects with continuous character animations, opening new possibilities for combat systems in future projects.
