Onyx: The Dark Grip Aims to Revive GameCube-Era Horror
Bloober Team wants its upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, Onyx: The Dark Grip, to capture the atmosphere of classic horror games from the Nintendo GameCube era, including Resident Evil 4 and Eternal Darkness.
Developed by Broken Mirror Games, a label associated with Bloober Team, the psychological horror adventure is designed specifically for Nintendo's latest console and will launch in 2027.
The project reflects the studio's interest in creating an experience that feels closely connected to Nintendo hardware rather than simply adapting a conventional horror game.
According to Bloober Team's official announcement, Onyx: The Dark Grip is a 2.5D adventure built entirely around handheld gameplay.
Players experience the story through two connected roles: the Vessel, an ordinary man struggling to survive, and the God, a mysterious entity capable of manipulating the world around him.
The game takes place in an isolated town trapped in an endless winter, where survival requires exploration, resource management, and interaction with the environment.
Unlike traditional horror games, Onyx uses several Nintendo Switch 2 features directly in its gameplay.
Players can interact with objects using the touchscreen, tilt the console to influence events, and even use its microphone to help the protagonist survive freezing conditions.
Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno has emphasized the company's long-standing interest in Nintendo and its approach to creating games around distinctive hardware features.
The studio's renewed focus on Nintendo follows its success with the Silent Hill 2 remake, which helped strengthen its reputation in the horror genre.
Onyx: The Dark Grip is scheduled for release exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027, although an exact launch date has not been announced.
