Original Gears of War Producer Criticizes E-Day's Story
Laura Fryer, former executive producer of the original Gears of War games, has criticized Gears of War: E-Day for shifting attention away from Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, arguing that the new characters weaken the emotional connection that defined the franchise's early installments.
Fryer shared her concerns in a video published on YouTube, reflecting on her experience with the latest entry in the series.
The former Xbox executive explained that she had been looking forward to exploring the early relationship between Marcus and Dom, particularly because E-Day takes place before the events of the original Gears of War.
Although Fryer praised the shooting mechanics and acknowledged that the gameplay retains the familiar Gears of War experience, she expressed disappointment with the campaign's narrative direction.
Her main criticism focuses on Bravo Squad, where newer characters receive several important moments that she believes should have belonged to Marcus and Dom.
Fryer argued that shifting the spotlight toward other squad members reduces the sense of friendship and brotherhood that helped establish the original games' identity.
The criticism is particularly significant given Fryer's involvement in the early Gears of War franchise, including her work as executive producer on the original game and its sequel.
Developed by The Coalition, Gears of War: E-Day serves as a prequel set 14 years before the first installment, following Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago during the beginning of the Locust invasion.
The game launched on October 6, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S and PC, introducing new characters alongside the returning protagonists.
Despite her concerns about the story, Fryer's comments focused primarily on the treatment of established characters rather than the game's combat or overall technical quality.
