Phantom Blade Zero Boss Fights Were Inspired by Music

S-Game has revealed an unusual approach to developing Phantom Blade Zero, with some boss battle music composed before the enemies themselves were designed. Rather than treating the soundtrack as a final production step, the studio used music to help shape certain encounters.

Speaking to PCGamesN, composer Caisheng Bo explained that music has played an important role throughout development. Creative director Soulframe Liang sometimes used Bo's compositions as inspiration for designing boss fights, allowing the soundtrack to influence the atmosphere and direction of individual encounters.

Bo recalled an example from 2023 when Liang requested music for a boss encounter before its visual design had been completed. The composer was encouraged to create something inspiring without specific artwork to guide him. Although that particular composition was ultimately left unused, the experience reflected the studio's flexible development process.

The composer also discussed Phantom Blade Zero's musical identity, which combines traditional Chinese instruments with modern genres such as rock, metal, and electronic dance music.

Not every composition created during development will appear in the main game. However, the Deluxe Edition includes an in-game music player featuring some unused tracks, including an experimental piece blending jazz with traditional Chinese instruments.

Bo also revealed that an earlier composition for a bride-themed boss was rewritten following feedback from the development team. The original version will remain accessible through the Deluxe Edition's music player.

Phantom Blade Zero is scheduled to launch on October 29, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and PC.
