Phantom Blade Zero Has an AAA Budget but Keeps Its Indie Spirit, Says Developer
Phantom Blade Zero is being developed with the budget and production resources of a major AAA game, but Chinese studio S-Game is determined to preserve the creative freedom and experimental approach commonly associated with independent developers.
Game director and S-Game founder Soulframe Liang recently discussed the challenges of moving from mobile game development to a large-scale action RPG powered by Unreal Engine 5, explaining why the studio continues to embrace creative risks despite its growing resources.
S-Game Wants to Combine AAA Production With Indie Creativity
According to IXBT Games, Liang believes that an independent mindset is defined by creative ambition rather than the size of a project's budget.
The transition to AAA development required S-Game to adopt new workflows, develop technical expertise, and collaborate with experienced Chinese studios that had previously contributed to international projects.
Rather than relying entirely on established industry veterans, the studio also gave important creative responsibilities to younger developers with limited experience on large productions.
These included work on the game's opening sequence and final boss, allowing newer team members to contribute directly to major parts of the project.
Phantom Blade Zero Prepares for Its October Release
Phantom Blade Zero combines fast-paced martial arts combat with a dark fantasy setting inspired by traditional Chinese wuxia stories.
The game follows Soul, a skilled warrior caught in a conspiracy who must uncover the truth behind his circumstances.
S-Game's approach reflects its ambition to deliver the production quality expected from a major action RPG without abandoning the experimentation that shaped its earlier projects.
Phantom Blade Zero is scheduled to launch on October 29, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and PC.
