PlayStation 2 DUO Turns a Real PS2 Into a Foldable Handheld

A hardware enthusiast has transformed Sony's PlayStation 2 into a foldable handheld console called PlayStation 2 DUO, combining original PS2 components with a flexible display and a custom-built enclosure.

The project was created by modder LCLDIY, who published the finished design on October 23, 2026, demonstrating how Sony's classic console can operate in a portable form without relying on software emulation.

According to the original PlayStation 2 DUO project page on Hackaday, the creator modified a genuine PS2 motherboard to reduce its size before integrating it into a newly designed handheld chassis.

The display came from an early foldable smartphone. Because the flexible panel requires approximately 30 degrees of bending clearance, LCLDIY designed a wide-angle hinge that prevents the screen from folding completely flat.

The enclosure was developed using 3D modeling software and manufactured through 3D printing, with physical controls integrated into the device.

Unlike many modern handhelds that run PlayStation 2 games through emulation, the PS2 DUO uses modified original console hardware.

Demonstrations shared with the project show games including Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, God of War, and Shinobi. The device also reportedly supports external wireless controllers.

LCLDIY has made the project's PCB design files and 3D-printable enclosure models available through Hackaday, providing documentation for other hardware enthusiasts.

However, recreating the handheld requires specialized components, electronics experience, and substantial hardware modification. The device is a personal engineering project rather than an officially manufactured PlayStation product.

PlayStation 2 DUO demonstrates how original console hardware can be adapted into an unconventional portable design more than two decades after the PS2's debut.
