PS5 Emulator Now Supports Original PS1 Discs via USB
A new update to SwanStationPS5 has introduced support for original PlayStation 1 discs, allowing users to play classic games on jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles through an external USB disc drive.
The feature expands the capabilities of the unofficial emulator, which runs natively on modified PS5 hardware and is based on the SwanStation emulation core.
According to the project's GitHub page, users can connect a compatible USB CD drive and insert a physical PS1 game. The software can then import the disc's contents and launch the game.
Once a disc has been imported, subsequent launches can use the previously stored game data, reducing the need to repeat the process.
The emulator also offers several features unavailable through standard PS5 backward compatibility, including higher internal resolutions, save states, cheat support, and RetroAchievements integration.
Some versions provide additional visual options, allowing players to adjust image quality and customize how older PlayStation games appear on modern displays.
The new functionality builds on recent progress in the PS5 homebrew community, which has also introduced unofficial support for playing physical PlayStation 2 games.
However, SwanStationPS5 requires a jailbroken console and a compatible external optical drive. The PS5's built-in disc drive cannot read original PS1 CDs.
The project is independently developed and is not an official Sony feature. Compatibility may vary depending on the console's software configuration, external drive, and individual game.
