PS5 Modders Make Progress on PS3 Emulation After PS2 Disc Breakthrough

PlayStation 5 modders are making progress toward running PlayStation 3 games on jailbroken consoles, following recent developments that enabled physical PlayStation 2 DVDs to work through unofficial emulation software.

The latest efforts focus on bringing RPCS3, the open-source PS3 emulator, to PS5 hardware. Although early builds have demonstrated promising results, direct playback of original PS3 discs has not yet been confirmed.

PS3 Emulation Projects Show Early Progress on PS5

The development follows the introduction of PS5SX2, an unofficial emulator that allows modified PS5 consoles to run compatible PS2 games, including supported physical DVDs.

Developers are now exploring similar possibilities for PlayStation 3 titles through experimental RPCS3 ports.

One project, KB-RPCS3, has released an early alpha version of its source code. Its developer reports that games such as Limbo, WWE '12, and Grand Theft Auto IV have been tested, although performance varies considerably.

Grand Theft Auto IV, for example, reportedly experiences significant frame-rate drops during gameplay, highlighting the technical challenges that remain.

Another project, PS5 RetroArch, includes experimental work on integrating RPCS3 into the PS5 homebrew environment.

Original PS3 Disc Support Remains Unconfirmed

Despite the progress, these projects do not currently establish that a jailbroken PS5 can play original PS3 Blu-ray discs directly from its disc drive.

Existing demonstrations primarily involve game backups and experimental software builds rather than straightforward physical-disc compatibility.

PlayStation 3 emulation is particularly demanding because of the console's Cell processor architecture, which makes accurate and efficient emulation difficult.

The software also requires a modified PS5, and it is not officially supported by Sony. Jailbreaking can introduce security risks and affect access to PlayStation services.

For now, PS3 emulation on PS5 remains an experimental development, with no confirmed timeline for reliable support across the PlayStation 3 game library.
