PS5 Overdrive Store Returns With 1,800 Games After GitHub Removal
Overdrive, an unofficial game store for jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles, has resurfaced through alternative projects shortly after its original GitHub repository disappeared.
The application attracted attention for offering access to more than 1,600 PS4 and PS5 games without payment. However, its original repository was removed just days after the project gained widespread attention online.
According to GamesRadar+, alternative versions appeared shortly afterward, including a rebuilt version claiming to feature more than 1,800 games.
One developer reportedly reconstructed the application by reverse-engineering its previous release, allowing the project to continue under a different GitHub account.
The original removal has raised questions about possible legal action from Sony Interactive Entertainment. Some reports suggest that the developer received a cease-and-desist notice, although Sony has not publicly confirmed its involvement.
Overdrive was designed for modified PS5 consoles and allowed users to browse and download games through an interface resembling a digital storefront. Its popularity followed recent developments in the PS5 jailbreaking community.
The situation highlights the difficulty of permanently removing unofficial software projects once their code or compiled versions have circulated online. Similar situations have occurred with other gaming applications, including the Nintendo Switch emulator Yuzu, which faced legal action in 2024.
Despite the appearance of alternative versions, their long-term availability remains uncertain. Sony has not announced any official response to the newly published Overdrive projects.
