PS5 Playden Launcher Runs Windows Steam Games Locally
A new homebrew launcher called Playden allows jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles to run selected Windows PC games from a user's Steam library, bringing local PC game compatibility to Sony's hardware without cloud streaming.
Developed by Leo Lobato, Playden connects to a legitimate Steam account, displays owned games, and downloads supported titles directly to the console.
According to the developer's official GitHub repository, Windows games run through prospero-win, a PlayStation 5 adaptation of Wine, alongside graphics translation technologies including DXVK and vkd3d-proton.
Each game receives a separate Windows environment and its own tile on the PS5 Home screen. The launcher also supports Steam Cloud saves, controller configuration, and DualSense input translated into Xbox-compatible controls.
Playden version 0.5.0, released October 19, introduced Direct3D 12 support, allowing games including Cyberpunk 2077 to run. Version 0.6.0 followed on October 22 with 120Hz output support and the ability to import existing Windows game folders.
The project's compatibility testing includes Cyberpunk 2077, Resident Evil 4, Hollow Knight, and several other games. However, reported compatibility does not establish stable frame rates or performance comparable to a gaming PC.
Games protected by certain anti-cheat systems or third-party DRM, including Denuvo, remain incompatible.
Playden is currently alpha software, with testing focused on PS5 firmware 13.60. Other firmware versions have not been comprehensively verified.
The developer also warns that Steam session tokens are stored without encryption and that synchronization errors could overwrite cloud saves. Users should treat the launcher as experimental and understand the account and data risks before using it.
