PS6 Handheld Rumored to Get Exclusive AMD RDNA5 Chip

Sony's rumored PlayStation 6 handheld could receive a custom AMD RDNA5 processor unavailable to competing portable gaming devices, according to new information attributed to Digital Foundry.

The claim emerged on October 25, 2026, following a discussion in a subscriber-exclusive episode of Digital Foundry Direct. Richard Leadbetter reportedly mentioned behind-the-scenes discussions suggesting that Sony has some form of exclusivity involving RDNA5 technology for its upcoming handheld.

The comments were detailed in a GamingLeaksAndRumours Reddit discussion, which attributed the information to Digital Foundry's latest subscriber report.

The rumored arrangement does not necessarily mean Sony has exclusive rights to AMD's entire RDNA5 graphics architecture. Instead, it may concern a specific semi-custom processor designed for PlayStation's portable hardware.

The discussion also points to AMD becoming more selective about developing custom chips for smaller hardware manufacturers. Such projects require substantial engineering resources, making guaranteed production volumes an important consideration.

Sony could potentially meet those requirements through a large hardware order, while manufacturers developing lower-volume handheld PCs might need to rely on standard AMD processors.

If accurate, the arrangement could give Sony access to a tailored RDNA5 design while competing devices, including a future Steam Deck or Xbox handheld, pursue different hardware configurations.

However, this does not establish that rival manufacturers are prohibited from using RDNA5 technology.

Neither Sony nor AMD has publicly confirmed an exclusive RDNA5 handheld agreement, and the specifications, pricing, and release date of Sony's rumored portable console remain unannounced.

The report therefore remains an unverified hardware rumor rather than confirmation of the PlayStation 6 handheld's final processor.
