PSSR 3 Rumored for 2027 With Frame Generation on PlayStation

Sony's next-generation PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology, reportedly called PSSR 3, could arrive in 2027 with AI-powered frame generation, according to unconfirmed reports surrounding the company's rumored handheld console.

The technology has been linked to Project Canis, an unannounced portable PlayStation device that reportedly uses a custom AMD processor and relies on advanced upscaling to deliver demanding games at higher display resolutions.

A September report examining the Project Canis leak suggested that PSSR 3 could combine image reconstruction with frame generation, potentially allowing the handheld to display additional AI-generated frames without rendering each one traditionally.

The same reports have raised the possibility of future support for PS5 Pro, although Sony has not confirmed compatibility with its existing console.

There is, however, an official foundation for the speculation.

In March 2026, PlayStation system architect Mark Cerny confirmed that Sony and AMD were developing frame-generation technology for PlayStation platforms through their Project Amethyst collaboration.

Cerny said an equivalent to AMD's FSR Frame Generation would eventually reach PlayStation, but declined to identify supported hardware or announce a release window.

He also confirmed that no additional major technology releases were planned for 2026.

Frame generation differs from conventional PSSR upscaling. Upscaling reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render, while frame generation creates additional intermediate frames to improve perceived motion smoothness.

Neither technology guarantees improved input responsiveness or native rendering performance.

For now, PSSR 3 remains an unofficial name associated with leaks, and its rumored 2027 launch, handheld debut, and PS5 Pro support have not been confirmed by Sony.
