Resident Evil 7 Not a Hero Prototype Reveals Cut Ending

A previously abandoned version of Resident Evil 7's Not a Hero expansion has surfaced online, revealing an alternative storyline in which Chris Redfield saves his entire team and captures Lucas Baker alive.

The discovery was documented by researcher Michael Kemp, known as Thekempy, in an October 2026 video examining a partially recovered PlayStation 4 development build dated March 2017.

According to the original prototype footage discussed in the research, the early expansion contained substantial differences in dialogue, mission objectives, puzzles, and its final encounter.

In the abandoned storyline, Chris successfully rescues all three Umbrella soldiers trapped inside Lucas Baker's underground facility. The released expansion instead has all three soldiers killed by Lucas's traps.

The prototype also removes the explosive bracelet attached to Chris in the finished game. Equipment upgrades are obtained through locked containers rather than recovered from fallen soldiers.

The biggest change concerns the ending. Instead of fighting a mutated Lucas Baker, Chris confronts Alan Droney, a character connected to the tanker storyline in Resident Evil 7.

Lucas survives the encounter and is captured for questioning about The Connections, the organization involved in the game's bioweapon experiments.

Capcom originally planned to release Not a Hero in spring 2017 but delayed the expansion after acknowledging that its quality did not meet expectations. The rewritten DLC eventually launched on December 12, 2017.

The recovered prototype remains incomplete because some development files were overwritten. Capcom has not authenticated the recovered material or announced plans to release the abandoned version.
