Resident Evil Becomes Highest-Grossing Movie in Franchise History With $320 Million
Zach Cregger's Resident Evil has officially become the highest-grossing movie in the franchise's history, surpassing $320 million at the worldwide box office. The 2026 reboot has overtaken Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, which previously held the record with approximately $314.1 million.
The achievement also makes Resident Evil the biggest box office success of Cregger's directing career, surpassing his previous hit, Weapons, which earned around $270 million worldwide.
Resident Evil Sets a New Box Office Record
According to The Numbers, the film has generated approximately $138.5 million domestically and $181.7 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $320.2 million.
Its latest international performance received a significant boost from China, where the movie earned approximately $40.6 million during its opening period. Japan also contributed to the film's overseas success with a $3.6 million debut.
The strong results have pushed the reboot ahead of every previous Resident Evil movie in worldwide box office earnings, without adjusting for inflation.
A New Milestone for Zach Cregger
Released in September 2026, the film introduces a standalone story rather than directly adapting the events of a particular Resident Evil game.
Starring Austin Abrams, the movie follows Bryan, a medical courier whose delivery to a hospital turns into a dangerous journey during a mysterious outbreak.
With a reported production budget of $75 million, the film has earned more than four times that amount in worldwide ticket sales, although box office revenue does not directly represent studio profit.
The latest figures mark a major commercial achievement for both the Resident Evil franchise and Cregger, with the film continuing its theatrical run in international markets.
